At North Karelia Seta’s meetings and events, we follow safer space guidelines. It is important to us that everyone feels safe in all our activities. North Karelia Seta’s community spaces on Torikatu are substance-free.
Safer Space Principles
- All forms of discrimination, racism, and harassment are strictly prohibited.
- Give space.
- Respect your own and others’ boundaries – physical, mental, and social.
- No means no. Stop or change your behavior if someone asks you to.
- Do not make assumptions about anyone’s gender, sexual orientation, ability, or other personal characteristics.
- In a safer space, it is also safe to step outside your comfort zone from time to time.
At meetings and events, especially keep these in mind:
- Do not photograph participants without their permission, not even from a computer screen. Participants’ names may appear on the screen during meetings – do not share or publish any such material without consent. Always ask for permission from the people shown in images before publishing them or tagging them on social media.
- It is human to make mistakes. We may unintentionally offend someone or speak without thinking – for example, interrupt someone or use unintentionally hurtful language. Point these out respectfully and without blame. The assumption is that everyone participates in the conversation with good intentions from their own perspective. If you disagree, express it constructively.
- Discussion, debate, and differing opinions are a natural part of meetings and human interaction. We can all contribute to ensuring a respectful and appreciative atmosphere in our meetings and events. We do not embarrass others.
- Discriminatory attitudes are not opinions. Every participant is responsible for ensuring a safer space. If you witness discrimination, racism, or harassment, address the situation.
